Oil it Up Part 2: Grapeseed, Castor, and Tea Tree Oil

Castor oil in your hair? Grapeseed oil – which can be found beside the olive oil in your average grocery store? Tea tree Oil? These are the oils that were not included in my first roundup of popular oils.

Below learn all about their uses and what natural hair issues they can help you solve.

Grapeseed Oil

What it is: Grapeseed oil is just that Рoil squeezed from the seeds of grapes. It is often used along with other oils because it is fairly light and does not overpower them. Grapeseed oil is unique because it is  hypoallergenic. This makes it a good choice for those with sensitive skin.

grapeseed-bannerUses: Grapeseed oil can be used as a hot oil treatment and can reduce breakage and split ends. To use as a hot oil treatment, put the oil into a plastic (zip lock) bag, and warm in hot water. Then massage into the scalp. Leave on for 20 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.

Castor Oil

What it is: Castor oil comes from the castor bean. Unlike some other oils you will run into, Castor oil is thick – in part because it is a vegetable oil. It is odorless.

Uses: It is used to combat thinning hair, treat dry scalp, and to treat skin or scalp infections. If using castor oil for the first time, do not be turned off by its texture. As stated before, it is very thick. Follow these tips to make your experience with castor oil a great one.

  1. Be sure your hair is moisturized prior to using this oil.
  2. Remember a little goes a long way.
  3. If too thick, mix with another oil.
  4. If using Castor oil without mixing it with something else such as rosemary oil, first pour into a small container and then apply by dipping your fingers in the oil and massaging into your scalp.

Tea Tree Oil

What it is: Tea tree oil is an essential oil, meaning simply that it carries the scent or some other essential property of the plant from which it is extracted.

Uses: Tea Tree oil is one that most of us are familiar with. It is used on natural hair as well as relaxed and color-treated. It is good for refreshing the scalp and promoting hair growth. If you want to reap the benefits of this oil, use products containing it, such as Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo. If you are having issues with dry and itchy scalp or just want to maintain the best scalp health, use Tea Tree oil. Of all of the oils, I have had the most experience with this one and can honestly say any hyper surrounding it is well deserved.
