Slight Work: The Importance of Workplace Attire

Feeling powerless at work? Want to show just how assertive you can be? Want to be seen as a force to be reckoned with? Look the part.

If you’re faking it till you make it and want people to believe the hype, look like it.

Yes, some will argue that workplace attire is unimportant, especially if you work in a decidedly unfashionable career or office. I learned early that journalists are not the most  trendy people. With all of that running around chasing stories and sources who has time for anything other than slacks, blazers, and flats or grandma heels. You know! Grandma heels! The shoes with the little stub of a heel.

But my question to those who say style does not matter, is why not? Why not look put your best foot forward and look your best? Personally, when I dress up for work I feel better. If you’re in a drab office, brighten up your own space by looking good yourself. Plus, you never know who you are going to see between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. All too often I’ve been caught by a cutie on a day when I didn’t bother to wear anything other than a Target sweater and old Gap pants. The first impression is a lasting one, so make it count.

This past week I decided to rock a more formal look than normal. Felt great the day I did and vow to dress up more often. My office is not casual, but it is not suit and tie every day either.

Let’s do it ladies. Let’s make a vow to walk into the office like we mean it more often. I, for one, am excited to see the results.
