Psst. I have a secret. All of those great protective styles some naturals get to wear? They do not work for me. I suffer from what I not so affectionately call the “fuzzy wuzzies” and the “fuzz halo.”
Instead of twists and braids lasting weeks or even months as they ideally would, most of my protective styles last a few days, a week tops. This applies even to intricate cornrows and flat twists with additional hair.
So why do I keep trying protective styles? I get sick of dealing with my curls daily! So of course I want a week or two off every now and then. However, there is no economical advantage to my stubbornness and desire for protective styles. There is really no point in spending as little as $20 (for two Goddess braids) to $200 (for individual braids) if I am not getting my money’s worth and the styles only last for days. So instead I am now on the journey to find some protective styles for my hair that will last a day or two that I can do at home. French braids are an option, as are updos that do not involve braids or twists.
I had goddess braids about a week ago and while I was getting them done the stylist asked me how long they usually lasted. My response was about a week. Her response, “I feel bad for people with hair like you.” Thanks! But at least she was honest and agreed that protective styling in that sense is most likely a waste of time for me.
Wish me luck and I’ll share some results with you later this week.
